There is universal belief that one should not inflict pain to others.

One strives so that others be happy.

This is WRONG.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is that secret of RIGHT action, which the saints said in lay man's language?

BE ATTENTIVE while reading the few lines below.

Saints say

It is not important whether your actions give joy/sorrow to others.

It is important that your actions be 'appropriate'.

Irrespective of whether the result of your action is pleasure or pain,

the KEY principle is that the action has to be 'appropriate'.

Easy Example:

Toddler needs to take an injection that is painful.

The mother proceeds to give the child the necessary injection, though it is painful to the child [and the mother to watch].

This is 'appropriate' action.
